Five Ways to Land Your Dream Physical Therapy Job

Landing a great rehabilitation position requires more than just knowledge and great skills and the ability to showcase these to potential employers. It also requires drive, confidence, ambition and the ability to go where the job possibilities may lead you. For example, if you’re now in one part of the country with your dream job waiting in another; you may have to be willing to take a chance and move.

There are five key components to finding the professional rehab therapist’s Holy Grail.

1. Be flexible. The more flexible you are with your demands and desires, the more likely it is that you will land the job of your dreams. If you are too rigid in the way that you think about a career, you may find that no job will ever measure up. Keep an open mind about the type of rehab therapy position you are pursuing and be open to different possibilities.

2. Make sure you are willing to move to achieve your dreams. Often, the job of your dreams isn’t waiting for you in your backyard; you have to travel to find it. In fact, this is one of the benefits of being a travel rehab therapist because you get to “try on” various locales and position types until you find the perfect fit for you.

3. Beef up your experience whenever possible. The more varied your rehab therapy experience, the more attractive a candidate you will be. Get experience whenever possible. Work full time and then spend some of your downtime doing some pro bono rehab work for a local clinic or community center. You might be exhausted at the thought of giving up your free time, but the experience – and goodwill – earned will take you far in your career.

4. Cultivate razor sharp customer service abilities. Rehab therapy is all about the patient and your ability to interact with him or her. Hone your “bedside manner” and customer service skills and learn to be the consummate professional. This is important to any and every potential employer looking for rehabilitation professionals.

5. Don’t be afraid to advertise your skills. If you don’t advertise yourself, who will? Don’t be cocky, but don’t be afraid to be confident. If you see a job you want, go after it based on your merit, skills and extensive experience.

Operational Consistency: Three ways to get there?

Nearly everyone in the restaurant business has heard a version of this inconsistency nightmare story. You discover a great new restaurant. You boast to friends about how good the food and service is. Finally you return with friends and family, only to have a horribly disappointing experience. No the management didn’t change! This is simply a classic example of why guests place such a high value on consistency.

Industry luminaries like Joe Lee, former chairman of Darden Restaurants, and Norman Brinker, former chairman of Brinker International, made this a cornerstone of their restaurant empires. Without the ability to consistently deliver on a promised experience, I would even argue, you don’t have a brand. Your brand and your promised experience are one in the same in the minds of your guests. Repeatedly fail to deliver on the promise and your brand becomes worthless.

Now if improving operational consistency or maintaining it during growth are your goals, there are 3 interconnected roads that will lead you to these objectives. These drivers of operational consistency are (1)talent selections, (2)training, and (3)systematization. Depending on your operations you may benefit from one or some combination of each of these approaches.

Talent Driven Consistency

Over the years, as I pursued my passion and training in the culinary arts, I have had the opportunity to spend time behind the scenes of some legendary food operations, including the Waldorf Astoria in New York, Ritz Carlton in Laguna Nigel, and Hay-Adams in Washington D.C., where I completed an apprenticeship. Each of these operations are famous for exceptional quality and above all operational consistency.

Spend a little time in either of their kitchens or dining rooms and the main reason is immediately clear; they attract and hire only exceptional talent. If talent is defined as an existing set of skills and abilities, then such operations, by virtue of their reputation, have the luxury of choosing from the cream of the crop. For example, I cannot envision anyone of the above operation’s kitchen staff not being able to produce a perfect “Brunoise” upon request from the executive chef or anyone in the dining rooms not knowing how to properly control the pace of a meal.

Now, I realize that a small percentage of restaurants operate in market segments that attracts the most elite talent. My real point is this. Hiring the best talent that fits your operation and that you can afford is the first step to building operational consistency.

Training Driven Consistency

Likewise, training is a huge area of impact for restaurants, when it comes to creating consistency. I watched this critical area evolve over the years. When I first started in the industry the “Magic Apron Technique” was still very common. Managers would hand a new employee a kitchen or dining room apron and magically expect the employee to figure out what to do next.

Since those days, we have made great leaps to training checklists, training manuals, certified trainers, regional training managers, and dedicated training departments. While I firmly believe that all of these weapons in our training arsenals are great, I find that the most successful operators create a “Training Cultures”.

These restaurant leaders have developed a unique commitment to ongoing training. Their employees see training not as a weekly or monthly event, but, as a part of everyday business. I recently experienced such a culture during a visit to Ann Arbor Michigan. I had heard of the remarkable service and food quality of a local deli called Zingerman’s, so I decide to see for myself.

The operation, which is best known for it’s focus on employee training was everything that I had heard. The place operated like a well oiled machine, in spite of a line extending outside the front door. More importantly, each hourly employee that I spoke with was so well versed on the food and operation, I could have easily mistaken them as an owner or manager of the business. It is this type of training culture that results in consistency and a competitive advantage.

Systems Driven Consistency

Once you have selected the best employees available and achieved training nirvana, you may still want added insurance. One way to do this is to bake consistency right in to your operation. Your menu, product specifications, and equipment selections are three important areas that can help build systemic consistency.

Ray Kroc the legendary leader responsible for developing the McDonald’s Franchise, leveraged all three of these areas, to create one of the most consistent food operations the world has ever seen. Beyond fast food there are other examples. In the area of menu development the upscale dinner house, Houston’s, comes to mind. Over the past 15 years, I have dined in there restaurants all over the country from Chicago to Orlando, and Los Angeles. I cannot recall a disappointing experience, which is saying a lot for such a large operation. I am certain that their highly focused menu is a major contributor to their success.

Similarly, a sensible approach to product sourcing can relieve pressure on your operations and reduce labor costs. Consider this example. In the 90’s, when infused oils and flavored vinegars first gained popularity, chefs all over the country were producing, storing, and labeling many versions of these products right in their kitchens. Today top quality commercial versions are available everywhere. Larger operations even go as far as have proprietary versions of their best spice blends, sauces, and other key ingredients produced for them.

When it comes to equipment, having the right tools makes a world of difference with operational consistency. I am always shocked when I visit a kitchen and find the only operating portion scale hidden deep in a storage area. Proper tools and equipment for measuring, weighing, producing, and serving your recipes lay at the heart of consistency. Starbucks realized this fact, when it chose to install high quality, automated espresso machines in their operations.

Although there may be varied roads to operational consistency for different types of operators, the big 3 categories of talent selection, ongoing training, and systems implementation stand as proven paths.

Imagine heading off on your dream trip but then not being able to spend money on anything else because the Hotel room is SO expensive! It’s something we’ve all had to face, do I spend more on the hotel room and have less to spend on activities or do I spend less on the hotel room and stay somewhere undesirable? What if there was a way to spend less and still stay well? If you read on you’ll see some great tips that can save you money on your next trip!

Know What You Want

Before you can save money, you need to know what you want from a hotel room. Do you want to have a luxurious place to stretch out and relax, or a cheap, modest room to quickly change clothes before you head out to see the sights? It’s easy to narrow down what you’re looking for by thinking about what kinds of extra’s you need to have. Do you have to have a pool? Do you need internet or a restaurant at the hotel. However, if you went to Qantas Airlines (Quantas.au.com) and the Hotel Pennsylvania (www.hotelpenn.com) and booked your flight and room separately, you’d pay $4,770. This isn’t always the case, of course, but sometimes packages aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

Make sure you check the rates, or you’ll think you’re getting a good deal while the booking site laughs all the way to the bank. The very same hotel stay can be the same price or even more expensive through a “discount” agency than if you booked through the hotel directly.

The moral of the story? Do your research! Make sure you know how much a night at a hotel is alone and then compare with your package rate to ensure you’re getting the savings you deserve.

Not all package deals are bad, as long as you know what you’re looking for. For example, your car rental agency may offer a free night at a participating hotel. The deal may be a third night free after a two-night stay, but if you’re planning on staying several days anyway, it’s a good deal.

One great feature is that you can enter your travel information and compare hotels, apartments, and bed and breakfasts side by side. If you don’t have set travel plans, you can see which dates are cheaper and book accordingly. You can also advance your search by entering in different amenities you’d like, such as pool or a kitchenette.

A sampling of hotels around the world showed that indeed, Wotif provides cheap rates. Want to visit Walt Disney World? The Raddison Resort Orlando, FLA USA is a stone’s throw from this world-renowned family destination. For $100 a night ($185 a night full rate) you get a gorgeous room with two double beds, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, exercise facility and a restaurant on site. The best partkids stay and eat for free as long as they are accompanied by one paying parent.

Want to stay in a Scottish castle for your holiday? The four-star Dalhousie House Castle and Spa in Edinburgh, Scotland offers a luxurious holiday experience that will make you feel like royalty. Standard castle room: $302 ($500 full price) and includes a double occupancy room in this 13th century fortress. For a little more ($350) you could stay in a themed castle room. They both will have their own comforts and bath.

Or perhaps you’d rather experience a decadent South Pacific holiday on Fiji. For $300 ($350 full rate) a night you can stay in the four-star Sonaisali Island Resort. Enjoy a restful holiday on a small island across the lagoon from mainland Fiji, with a health spa, tennis courts and a child minding program that includes sandcastle building. Children stay free of charge.

Smarter Travel: (www.Smartertravel.com) This is an awesome site to review if you want hotel, flight and car hire information. They have a page with links to assorted deals, such as booking a night at the Hilton in NYC and receiving free breakfast or free parking. If you’ve ever tried to park in Manhattan, you’ll realize what a bargain this is!

Plus you can’t beat the advice. In the Hotel section, the editor posts his/her favorite deal links which takes you to a detailed page that outlines the fine print (like having to stay for three nights, one being a weekend night). There are also sponsor deals to choose from.

The great thing about this site is that they aren’t doing the bookingthey link you to the hotel or sponsor in charge of the deal they advertise.

Check with Your Credit Card

This may sound silly, but checking with your credit card could result in cheap hotel rates. Sometimes the major credit card companies will link up with a hotel chain to promote travel and business in a specific area, giving discounts if the consumer uses their credit card.

For example, the Hilton Latin America and Visa have teamed up to give travelers a discounted rate on a stay at the Hilton hotels across Latin America if using a Visa card to pay. You’ll also get a continental breakfast and a generous credit toward food and beverage. Of course, there are conditions and limitations, such as a three-night stay, but if you’re traveling to somewhere as gorgeous as Buenos Aries, you’re going to want to stay for a long holiday.

Check Directly with the Hotel or Hotel Chain

Sometimes you can get a great deal by calling the hotel directly and asking about cheap hotel rooms. If you’re calling a chain, such as the Hilton, call the hotel in the town you’re staying in, as calling the main line will often get you an operator that’s located somewhere else. He/she may not know of the deals that particular hotel branch has to offer.

You can also check online for deals. You’ll find that a lot of different hotel chains will actually be able to beat the discount travel websites on a nightly price if you book direct with them.
