Italian Garden Design

A client in the Heights contracted Exterior Worlds to create an Italian garden with a number of complimentary, classical elements to the front and rear of their home. Their house had a classic Old World appearance to it. It was a two-story structure with a porch and an upstairs balcony. Steps led up to the porch, and shuttered windows with arched tops lined both the porch and the balcony. A stately, old, and very large oak tree grew just next to the house, reaching up and over the top of the house. The architecture and indigenous landscape were an ideal setting to further develop a European look and feel to the property.
We began by installing lights in the trees next to the home in order to illuminate the roof and balcony, and we placed lights under the eaves of the porch and patio to illuminate the surfaces, walls, and windows. We planted a small Italian garden in the front near the trees. In it, we placed a variety of ground cover plant species, shrubbery, and smaller, ornamental trees. This lent an organic sense to a very symmetrical and elegant structure, and helped develop the Classical theme we were asked to create. We completed the design in the front with urns placed on either side of the stairs that led up to the front door. This worked to create a sense of grand entryway that alluded to a sense of Roman antiquity and classical design.
The home had been built toward the front of the lot, so the majority of the property lay behind the house. This provided a great deal of room to develop an Italian garden with a number of functional and aesthetic elements that fit the lifestyles of the owners. The first thing we designed for them was a planter, shaped like a small wall, which surrounded the rear perimeter of the home. This provided a casual seating area for the home owners that they use as an overlook point to appreciate the scenery beyond. In the morning they could sit outside and watch the sunrise while they drank coffee and talked, or comfortably recline while they read the paper.
Just a few feet from this planter, we built a water fountain. We designed it as a rectangle to continue the movement of the house, because all Italian gardens are intended to follow the linear movement of architecture and maintain a sense of order and proportion throughout their continuity. Although the fountain featured very simple and compact proportions, we made it look much more dramatic and prominent by installing four water jets and 4 underwater lights to draw attention to it in the dark.
Around the fountain we then laid down a paver patio using a blend of hardscape and softscape paving. This blended construction made the patio appear to be fading into the grass, and caused the patio and surrounding gardens to look more classically Italian. The patio was surrounded by bull nose coping and sloped slightly toward the planter walls, which were built with unseen, 1-inch drain channel to provide a convenient and unobtrusive means of water runoff. We then filled the space around the new patio and planter with an Italian garden featuring cypress and decorative handmade pottery.
At the far end of the property, we completed our project with an arbor that functioned as a destination for outdoor entertainment and a terminus for the Italian garden design. The garden arbor was built on a limestone patio, and was constructed out of Permacast columns and a cedar top. We installed a ceiling fan within the arbor, and decorated the patio with tables and chairs to provide a comfortable gathering place for visiting guests.
One very unique feature was also added to this arbor to complete its design. This final piece was a mirror built to look like a window. Because the property bordered a commercial lot that had a rather unattractive building on it, we wanted to create a sense of enclosure and provide a focal point that would draw the eye away from the eyesore behind the arbor. A mirror proved much more useful for this purpose, because it both blocked the view of the building, and it magnified the apparent size of the Italian garden, fountain, planter, and rear of the home.

Visit Eram Garden while you Visit Shiraz

When you visit Shiraz, you will be struck by the old-world charm of Eram Garden. Also known as the Bagh-e Eram, it has a huge assortment of plants together with an old building. The garden dates back to the time when the Seljuks were on the throne. Because of their great patronage for greenery, they have constructed quite a few gardens during their rule. Bagh-e Eram was a contribution by Sanjar who was a Seljuk monarch. The place of interest was again restored to its former glory by the Zand kings who ruled between 1750 and 1794.
Beautifying the Garden
When the Zands rule was nearing its end, the charge of Eram Garden was held by Qashqai tribal chiefs. It was an epitome of beauty under the tribal chief Mohammad Qoli Khan, who was responsible for the attractive building which now stands among the plants. It was the early eighteenth century when the Qashqai chief ordered the planting of many varieties of trees including cypress, orange and pine.
From the Qashqai tribes, this place of interest was passed on to the Qajar dynasty. Mirza Hassan Ali Khan Nasir-al Mulk took great interest in the beautification of the garden and included the pavilion as it stands today. The designing was done by Mohammad Hassan, a famous architect, whose achievements you can hear when you visit Shiraz.
Building the Pavilion
The onus of completing the pavilion was passed on to Abol Qassem Khan, who was the son of Hassan Ali Khan. Later on, it further went down the line to Abdullah Qavani who gave it away to the Qashqai tribes and the ownership of the Eram Garden traveled a full circle. There are three stories in the pavilion which has been inspired by the architectural greatness of the Qajar and Safavid times. The bottommost story is beautifully decorated and was used as a summer resort. The atmosphere is cooled by a stream through the center of the structure which empties itself to the large pool in the front.
Beauty in Tiles
The middle and the upper stories are characterized by huge halls and terraces designed and decorated with tiles. There is attractive tile work throughout the building. The Eram Garden looks fabulous during spring and is now under the patronage of the Shiraz University. People coming to visit Shiraz come to Bagh-e Eram which is now part of a museum.

Safety First For Garden Bridges
Posted: May 12, 2009 |Comments: 0
|
]]>
After assessing your backyard’s future needs for expansion, you have decided that a garden bridge is the next logical item needed in your garden’s progression. But you’re worried that it won’t serve the right purpose that you want it to fill. For instance, how are your parents and other elders visiting your home going to get across without a handrail? And what about children, running amok on your bridge, and jumping into the gorge beneath – how will they be affected by your decision in new décor? Will they see it as more of a launch pad or a level place of reflection?
Many of the garden bridges you have seen on the market don’t usually come with hand rails – making you rather weary of creating landscaping that will justify putting one up in the first place. If the garden bridge you want doesn’t come with several standard safety features recommended, you can always add on to them with a little know how, and some good old American work ethic. A little research never hurt, as well.
When considering your garden bridge purchase, consider how wide it will need to be in order to be effective for your guests. If your normal visitors are able-bodied children and adults, a standard width bridge of 35 inches should work well. If your guests include the elderly, or those in wheelchairs or other disabilities, you may want to consider buying a wider bridge, with at least 44 inches of clearance across. This will ensure that all of your guests will be able to enjoy your new feature with ease. Also, consider the maximum weight load your garden bridge will be able to accommodate. Depending on what materials your garden bridge is made of, it will be able to hold different maximum weights. And added apparatuses to your guests will weigh them down, putting them at risk if you buy the wrong bridge. Determine what weight threshold is appropriate for you, and then purchase accordingly.
Next, (for continuity sake, if nothing else), determine what your garden bridge is made out of. Many garden bridges are made out of some sort of lumber material – be it pine, fir, cedar, or otherwise. Many home improvement stores can match the woods your garden bridges are made of, and recommend the right screws and fastening materials to make your hand rails out of. If you’re looking for a more exotic wood, the home improvement store should be able to point you in the right direction as to where you can get it. If they can not, open the phone book and start calling around to lumber yards around the area – they may be able to point you in the right direction.
Once you have your materials, its time to start measuring how high you need your garden bridge hand rails to be. If you are just keeping kids from jumping off the bridge and into the gorge or pond underneath, your hand rails do not need to be much higher than 12 inches to 20 inches. Many manufacturers consider foot-high rails to be nothing more than decorative additions to your bridge, so think about who exactly you are keeping on your path. The bigger the children, the higher you want your handrails to be. If you are looking for handrails for adults and the elderly to use while they cross over, then you will need to install rails that are at least 35 inches high, or higher. 35 inch high rails are the bare minimum to keep your guests walking across in comfort, while being effective as well; anything lower than that would be a fancy way to keep horse play off your garden bridge.
While buying a garden bridge can be a difficult decision, knowing how to make it safe can ease your mind in your purchase. By knowing how to make it accessible and safe for all your guests, you will be ensuring your investment for years to come.

Build A Fully Organic Hydroponics System
Hydroponics can be a great way to grow plants, but it can have its disadvantages. Maintaining consistent nutrient levels in the water can be a bit difficult for the average gardener. And for the organic gardener, supplying organic nutrients that are truly organic, just makes it that much more difficult. Aquaponics is a way to build a hydroponics system that is fully organic, and where the system takes care of nutrient levels itself.

Which mulch should be used for a flower garden?
I am so confused. I would like to know which type of mulch to buy for my flower garden? I have used what is in my yard to the best of my ability but will need something more. Cypress, Pine, Red Bark…Nuggets? What is best? I have never had to buy it before where I used to live. I am in NW AR if that helps also. Thank you for any advice.
Thank you everyone for your help, I appreciate it and it looks like I’m leaning towards to the shredded cypress unless more suggestions change my mind. And actually I’m in beautiful Arkansas but Arizona is quite lovely as well.
