The Elgin Center for Conservation and Behavioral Research

The Elgin Center is a research center established to aid scientists and students who wish to observe animal behavior in a controlled but naturalistic environment. The center primarily conducts its research at Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Florida. Lion Country Safari is a semi free ranging drive-through animal preserve where the animals have very little human interaction and live in social groups mirroring that of the wild. Here, researchers observe animals acting as they would in the wild while enjoying the benefits of observing a captive group. The research done at the Elgin Center is important in understanding the role of behavior in ecology. Understanding the ways animals interact with their environment is crucial to conservation efforts.
